Dear Skywalker and Staff,

Thank you for all your hard work to make this camp so fun. You made me feel so close to God. My favorite part of camp was the campfires. Your lessons were very inspiring. I’ve been thinking a lot about the lessons.

I also appreciate you sitting at my table the first day, and getting to know me. None of the staff at my other camp do that. I also really liked the classes you did. I learned a lot of things from these classes. Thank you again for all your work to make this camp extra special!

                                Outdoor Ed student 2011

This last letter perfectly portrays our theme from last year: “Will you give God your EVERYTHING?” To answer this question, it is important to remember that God gave us His everything so that we can have our purpose back-to know and love our Lord and Savior!

As an encouragement,

From 1983-1994, Don was the Assistant Pastor at Chapel By The Sea where he was responsible for the development of all programs and instrumental in the planning and construction of a new Family Life Center. He then planted the church, Abundant Life Christian Center, in Carlsbad and was the lead pastor for 5 years. The church was considered one of the top 10 church plants in Southern California for the Decade of the Harvest. In 2001, Don took on the Associate Pastor position at Carlsbad Christian Assembly where he was responsible for Staff Development, Adult Ministries, and Teaching Ministries. From 2007-2009, he served as interim Senior Pastor at Carlsbad Christian Assembly. He then moved into a staff position at Palomar Heights Assembly of God in 2009 and continues there today with involvement in staff development and pulpit ministry as needed.

While following God’s calling in church ministry, Don also worked occupationally in law enforcement. He graduated with honors from San Diego State University in 1973 with a degree in Recreation Administration. He joined the Carlsbad Police and worked in several capacities there over the next 10 years. After working as a patrol sergeant for 2 years (1981-1983), Don was made manager over training and personnel. He continued to move up the command chain through the next 20 years filling roles that include Carlsbad Police Traffic Division Commander, Watch Commander, Investigations Commander, Support Operations Commander, Field Operations Commander and Interim Chief of Police. In 1999, Don graduated from 192nd Session FBI National Academy. He was selected out of 250 police managers world-wide to serve as a spokesman and trainer for 192nd on public television.

Along with his public sector and ministry involvement, Don has been Chairman of the Mayors Youth Council, City of Carlsbad, a member of the Carlsbad School Attendance Review Board, a little league coach, Secretary of the Carlsbad Bobby Sox, Board Member of the North Coast Y.M.C.A, President of the Carlsbad Lions Club, Vice President of the Carlsbad Christmas Bureau, and Assistant Cross Country Coach for Tri-City Christian High School. He obtained teaching certificates from California Community College and California Private Education and has been an instructor at Palomar College and a Staff Instructor at San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute.

Our fire-side time includes crazy challenges, delicious snacks, up-lifting worship, and—my favorite—time in God’s Word! Seeing God work in my life and in the life of our OE students is the coolest gift I’ll have receive. Here’s somebody else who shares my heart:

Dear Skywalker and Staff,

Thank you sooo much for ever thing. Last week you really made me realize that we are God’s people and that we need a better relationship with God. Before going to Palomar I didn’t have a good relationship with God. I was going back and forth about if God was real. Now I know God is real and I’ll go to heaven. Thank you soooo much! I hope I get to come back soon.

What a blessing to be a part of the body of Christ!

Our 2012 Outdoor Ed season is almost here!

For the next three weeks we will post a letter from an OE student that serves as a testimony to the love and work of our Lord and Savior through the ministry of Outdoor Ed on Palomar Mountain. May it serve as a reminder of our faithful God and as a challenge to keep proclaiming the name of Christ!

A Letter from a student:

Dear Skywalker and Staff,

This had to be the best camp I have ever been to! My favorite part was probably either the campfire or night activities. My favorite night activity was either covert opps or man hunt. The class I liked the best was astronomy. I never knew there was such as thing as dwarf planets. My favorite/ the best / the most important part was the last campfire. We all were touched with that prayer time together. A lot of people were crying. I am proud to say I am now a Christian!

- Outdoor Ed student 2011

P.S. I said a boom chicka boom!!

That is what we’re all about! Praise God!
